Feasibility of a hybrid technology for the remediation of petroleum-polluted soil and groundwater

Absrtact
Petroleum gives the most charge payment, about two hundred million dollars annually, on the remediation of superfund site from the Soil and Groundwater Pollution Remediation Fund. The whole remediation process of contaminated sites usually needs 2-6 technologies in Taiwan. Thus, the construction costs of equipments and training costs of operators are pretty high. This project aims for developing a new in-situ/on-site hybrid technology (NIOHT) system with efficiency, feasibility, and competitiveness for petroleum-contaminated superfund site. The NIOHT system will provide a rapid, effective, and economic solution for the remediation of quite a few organic-contaminated soil and groundwater in the present and future. To completely simulate the removal characteristics in a superfund site, one contaminated gas station site was selected as target to perform the hydrogeological survey. The laboratory scale experimental box were developed to test the removal efficiency according to the information of hydrogeological survey. In this investigation, the dual-phase extraction, advanced oxidation process (AOP), and ozonic water flushing were performed in series to complete the experiment. Dual-phase extraction is the major method for pollutant extraction in the investigation. Separate the extraction liquid into oil and water layers, and recovery the oily organic pollutant. The extraction water was then treated with ozone. The ozonic water was flushing through groundwater level to improve the removal efficiency of float oil layer. The ozonic water was flushing through surface soil layer to remove the pollutant in the pore when the float oil layer inexistence. In addition, the ozonic water can release oxygen in the soil pore to prove a good environment for the aerobic microorganisms to decompose the pollutant. To obtain a better NIOHT applicability on superfund site, the project performing with the laboratory scale development. The petroleum contaminated-box will be built to simulate the superfund site; in addition, the optimal reaction process and conditions will determine to obtain the operation parameters for the pilot application test and used to derive the optimal model for pilot operation. We believe the project could provide practical experiments to further intensify the competitive edge of the collaboration company, and a part of petroleum-contaminated superfund site solution in Taiwan area.
